OuSyra Winery: A Family Passion on the Island of Syros
We at wine-love.de are proud to have discovered the exceptional OuSyra Winery. It brings us immense joy to be one of the few in Germany to offer these unique wines. Our journey of discovery led us to the picturesque island of Syros, where we encountered the charismatic OuSyra Winery, a true family passion initiated by Edward Maitland-Makgill-Crichton and Eileen Velissaropoulos.
We were immediately captivated by the winery’s story. Edward, a native Briton, laid the foundation for OuSyra Winery four decades ago by purchasing a charming house in Chroussa on the Greek island of Syros. There, he met Eileen, a local artist and educator, and together they developed a deep love for the island and for each other.
After Edward’s studies at Oxford and an inspiring world tour, the couple returned to Syros to establish OuSyra. Their goal was to create a winery that emphasizes the principles of sustainability and biodynamic agriculture.
They combined Edward’s global perspectives with Eileen’s deep understanding of the local culture to produce wines that are not only of high quality but also embody the essence and history of Syros.
Their joint project, OuSyra Winery, thus became a symbol of the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation, marked by their shared passion for the island.
OuSyra’s Unique Wines:
- Serifiotiko: A white wine made from up to 81-year-old, ungrafted bush vines of the Serifiotiko variety, native to Paros. This wine captivates with a combination of mineral saltiness, clear fruit, and freshness.
- Monemvasia: An excellent wine from the island of Paros that perfectly captures the characteristics of the local Monemvasia grape variety, blending tradition with innovation.
- Fokiano: An extraordinary rosé from old, ungrafted vines of the red Fokiano variety from Naxos, characterized by flavors of apricots, peach, blood orange, and pink grapefruit.
Sustainability and Growth
OuSyra Winery pursues a dedicated sustainable approach with the support of oenologists Panos and Spiros Zoumboulis. The winery’s philosophy is to produce wine that reflects the uniqueness of the Syros terroir and highlights the local grape varieties. This approach includes preserving the island’s biodiversity and cultural heritage by promoting indigenous varieties.
OuSyra plans to expand its vineyard area on Syros, ensuring this process is in harmony with the environment and sustainability principles.
