Wine tasting – how to do it properly
The word “wine tasting” sounds pretty professional, doesn’t it? But it’s actually not that difficult to discover the different aromas of a wine. In this blog post, you’ll find out how to do it easily.
What do you need to taste wine properly? Not much at all. A nice wine glass, possibly a corkscrew and a little concentration. But what you absolutely don’t need are freshly brushed teeth and the taste of coffee or chocolate in your mouth – because that drowns out the fine taste of the wine.
Preparations for the wine tasting
Tip: Before tasting, take a sip of water or eat a piece of tasteless bread so that no other taste in your mouth deceives your impression
To start, pour a small sip of wine into the glass and turn it so that a thin layer of wine forms on the inside walls of the glass. Then swirl vigorously and pour out the wine. This process, also known as “avinating”, helps to remove any residue from washing-up liquid, dust or other influences that could affect the smell and taste of the wine.
Describing the wine
Now you can begin. Pour 6 – 8 cl into the glass, swirl the wine briefly and then inhale it intensely. You can repeat this process as often as you like to ensure that no aromas go unnoticed. Some aromas only develop after a while, so take a little more time for this. Afterwards, you can of course taste the wine; take a sip and hold the wine in your mouth until you have perceived all the aromas.
To describe what you smell, you can use the seven aroma families: Floral, herbal, fruity, spicy, caramelized, smoky and microbiological. If you want to be even more specific, you should use familiar scents. When it comes to taste, the sweetness-acidity impression is evaluated first. After that, the same principle as for the aromas can be used again. The texture of the wine, meaning how it feels in the mouth, can be described using terms such as creamy, oily or velvety.
Overall rating of the wine
You can finish by evaluating the overall impression of the wine. If you have made notes beforehand, it may be easier for you to come to a final opinion. When evaluating the overall impression, for example, you can answer the following questions:
- Does the taste live up to the promise of the smell?
- Which dishes could the wine go particularly well with?
- What grade would you give the wine?
