The Origin of Sparkling Wine: A Journey through the History of Sparkling Enjoyment
The production of sparkling wine began in the 17th century with the discovery of bottle fermentation, a crucial process that made the production of sparkling wines possible in the first place. Bottle fermentation involves a second fermentation of the wine in the bottle, which allows the carbon dioxide to develop and gives the sparkling wine its characteristic structure. The tingling of the fine bubbles and the complex nuances of flavor make sparkling wine an ideal companion for celebrations. The Champagne region in the north of France became the center of production of the noble sparkling wine Champagne as early as the 18th century. In the course of the 20th century, sparkling wine also spread internationally and became popular as the preferred accompaniment for festive occasions.
The variety of sparkling wines available and the festive atmosphere with which it was associated contributed to sparkling wine still being a part of celebrations and special moments today.
Champagne, Prosecco and Sparkling Wine – What is the Difference again?
Sparkling wine is often known as “Schaumwein”, especially in Germany, but “Schaumwein” and sparkling wine are not immediately the same thing. The difference to “Schaumwein” lies in the higher carbon dioxide overpressure and the longer production time – which is why sparkling wine is also referred to as “Qualitätsschaumwein” – meaning with good quality.
There are also subtle differences between Seccos: the lower prices set Prosecco apart from high-quality champagne in particular. However, the Seccos themselves differ in their countries of origin: Prosecco is a protected designation of origin for sparkling wines and style wines from the Italian province of Veneto. Secco, on the other hand, is the name for a German sparkling wine.
Finally – champagne. This sparkling wine developed early on into a symbol of luxury and festive occasions. Even today, it remains an exquisite drink that is toasted in many societies as an expression of success. And what makes it special: only sparkling wines produced in the French province of Champagne can officially be called champagne.
Raise your Glasses: Toasting with Sparkling Wine for the Special Moment
The moment of the toast – what makes it special? The clinking of the glasses; the foam that tops off the golden sparkling wine and the beginning tingle on the tongue – a true pleasure that evokes celebration. The shared joy of the moment being celebrated and the feeling of happiness shared in community. The toast frames the moment of the festive occasion. Be it at birthdays, where you celebrate the birthday child; weddings, where you toast to the love and happiness of the married couple – or New Year, where you celebrate the start of a successful year together. The most important thing, however, is that the moment is something festive for family and friends to toast together as a sign of shared joy.
So which Sparkling Wine is Best for Toasting?
Which sparkling wine is best for a toast depends entirely on personal preference and the occasion. For those who prefer it drier and not too sweet, brut sparkling wines are best. For example, our Ihringer Fohrenberg Pinot Sekt Brut or our Ihringer Pinot Blanc Sekt Brut. These two sparkling wines stand out above all for their freshness and fruitiness. For the romantic moments we also have a rosé sparkling wine from Abruzzo in Italy: the Gran Cuvée Rosé.
